Following on from the previous post 5 Tips on Optimising Images for a Website, which talked about the image, file size, image name and format, file type, and alt text, here are 5 more tips that you should also consider when placing images on your website on blog.

1. Links – Anchor Text

Anchor text is the text that you can see when you link an image to another page. The anchor text needs to be relevant to the web page or blog post and it should also include keywords that are relevant to the image. Inserting text like “click here” doesn’t do anything for your search engine optimisation.

2. Be Consistent

On-page SEO should be consistent e.g. the page title, header, on-page keywords, anchor text, and images should have the same or similar keywords. This helps shout out to search engines what the web page or blog is about and willtherefore help your search engine rankings.

3. Image / Text Ratio

Website pages and blog posts shouldn’t contain too many images, they can add to a post but too many can make the page load slowly and visitor will get bored and leave.

4. Understandable without Images

If the images on the page fail to display then does the page still make sense to the visitor? This more page optimisation than image but it’s something you might want to consider.

5. Image Placement

Best practice is often viewed to have an image above the fold on the left or right hand side of the page, and possibly have the text wrapped around the image. Don’t have it at the very top of the page, above the H1 header tag, as this isn’t good SEO practice, the header tag show always be at the top of the page before any image.

Want to add images to your website or blog? It’s imprtant to insert them correctly otherwise you lose valuable search engine optimisation (SEO) which means your site will be harder to find. Images add an important visual element to website, which makes your website and blog more attractive and readable, but they are often inserted poorly or wrongly so we thought it would be useful if we gave you some tips…

1. The Image

It is important to make sure the image relates to the content / theme, as this can help deliver the message and adds interest to an web page which can result in visitors staying on your website longer.

2. File Size

Ideally, resize images before you upload them to your website as it is not enough to resize it on the website as that doesn’t reduce the file size enough. Make the image large enough to clearly see without being too large. As a guide, make the image under 25k. An additional drawback of the file size too large is the page may load slowly, especially if more than one image is on the page, and in turn visitors to your website could get bored and leaving quickly.

3. Image Name & Format

When saving the images, instead of naming it image.jpg or pic.jpg etc, choose a name that suits with the content, e.g. name it search-engine-optimisation.jpg if the post is about search engine optimisation, and note the format is to separate words with a dash.

4. Image File Type

Standard file types are JPG, PNG, GIF, there are others but you are best to stay with the standard.

5. Alt Text

Naming the Alt text correctly is another way to help search engines identify what the image and therefore your page is about, so again name the Alt text relevant to the content of the page and the same or similar to the other keywords on page and it the title. Don’t use too many keywords as this will confuse search engines. There is no need to have the dashes-between-the-words used in the alt text.

Here’s a great bit of Internet Marketing – Take a look at this brilliiant B2B Viral Video called ‪”A Day Made of Glass… Made possible by Corning“. At the time of writing this post almost 10,500 people have viewed it on YouTube in little over a month! The video was released by a glass company called Corning, and it shows what can be done to promote and add excitement to glass, and otherwise boring product.

The video could be classed as too long, but it’s such a high standard that they probably get away with it, and it could serve their target market better this length. Yes the video was undoubtedly expensive, but viral videos don’t have to be, it is more important to attract the viewers attention is some way and make them want to share the video with teir friends and colleagues, which is the whole idea, otherwise the company could have just sent it to its customers which would be rather limited.

The company didn’t show what their glass does in the video, they showed what could be done, sparking the imagination for the future. All in all it’s an excellent piece of Internet Marketing.

One take away lesson is the old marketing rule, don’t just focus on the product, focus on the benefits, solutions, what can you solve for your market, and also think about how you can add excitement or imagination to your product or service too.

Got a website and now wondering where start with Inbound Marketing, and how soon you will see results? With a few proven tactics you should start to see results fairly soon, but seeing traffic and leads doesn’t happen on its own, you do need to set some time aside and make an effort. There are many tactics, but these 6 steps give you a short summary of what needs to be done:

1. Research Keywords and Optimise your Blog

Research the best keywords and write articles optimised for your target keywords.

2. Create a Landing Page

Produce a whitepaper you can offer for visitors to your website to download then create a landing page for the offer allowing visitors to enter their contact information in exchange for the white paper.

3. Add a Call-to-Action

Drive traffic to your landing page by adding a call to action on your websites homepage, do an email campaign to subscribers in order to drive more visitors to the landing page, and post on Social Media networks and insert a link to the landing page.

4. Repeat

Keep blogging, create new landing pages and offers, promote and capture even more leads!

ConclusionThe sooner you get started with Inbound Marketing, sending traffic to your landing page with the offer the sooner you will see results, you should be able to generate more leads within a fairly short period of time, and with optimised pages, and possibly inbound links due to your compelling offer, your web traffic rankings may improve and lead to more success in the future.

This briefly summary about the Inbound Marketing process is not rocket science, but it does take time and effort to produce white papers, offers, educational pieces, content etc compelling enough to motivate people to want to download it in exchange for their contact information.

You need to keep blogging, creating landing pages and promoting them on your website.

Search engine optimisation (SEO), should not only attract visitors to your website, but attract the right visitors. Below are a few tips and techniques that will help your web pages rank well on the Internet, and in turn help get your website found…

Keywords

On each web page there should be a maximum of 2 or 3 keywords most regularly used that are on the subject of the page – in Search Engine Optimization terms this is keyword density. Also, you don’t want the keywords to be about totally different subjects, this can only confuse search engines. You need to be focused and clear what the page is about, hence the keywords being on the same topic. If you can identify more than 2 or 3 keywords on each page then think about separating them onto a new web page.

Keyword Format

For good SEO, keywords should be used at least three times in the text, e.g. near the top, in the middle and at the end of the page, and should be bold or underlined at least once to make it more noticeable to search engines. The keywords can also be hyperlinked to either relevant internal pages or external pages.

Meta Keywords

In the past meta keywords were seen to be important, now search engines care more about on page text and keywords, on relevant unique content. Some say to ignore using them but I’d still add up to 10 keywords that are relevant to the page just in case they become an important factor again in the future.

Meta Description

The description which is the text that appears under the page title on search engine results should be under 150 characters and contain 2 keywords in the title. Descriptions should like a short pitch giving a potential visitor a good reason why they should click on the link. It is recommended the description should be in a proper sentence containing relevant keywords, and not to stuff keywords into the description. The description isn’t as important as it used to be, but you never know if they may become more important in the future so may as well spend a few seconds adding a description while you are creating the page.

Word Count

There doesn’t appear to be a definite answer to this question, one person will argue more word another less as a 50 word page can outperform a 500 word page if optimized well. However, if there are too few words there may be less chance to put keywords in and optimise well, and equally if there are over 500 words on a page then the keywords may get diluted in amongst too much content. If an article is very long then there may be an argument to split the article onto 2 or more pages, which would potentially be more advantageous as a website with higher number of relevant pages can perform better than a website containing few pages.

Done right, Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is commonly know, should not only attract visitors to your website, but attract the right visitors. Below are a few techniques…

Links

The keywords used in the page should link to related pages on your website in order to tell search engines that the keywords are relevant and so is the page you are linking to. A useful strategy for SEO could if some pages are not showing up well on search engines because they are hidden away on your website lower down the page hierarchy is to link to that page if it’s relevant to the keyword, this will help the page you are working on and make the page you are linking to more visible to search engines which may help that pages web rankings too. Also use the targeted keywords on the page you’re linking to in the anchor text for all the links. Also, if possible have at least 3 internal links from other pages on the website to the page you’re working on, and that the anchor text has keywords that are included in the page you’re linking too.

Page Title

Keywords in the page title are very important consideration for SEO. Page titles are at top of the browser and should be under 70 characters with a maximum of 3 long-tail keywords in the page title. The most important (or most searched) keyword should be first and each keyword should be separated by pipes which are | or hyphens – or Google also says spaces or commas are also acceptable, they say only underscores are unacceptable. Another thing to mention about page titles is to make sure you use a different title on each page of your website.

Header Tags

Header tags are in the main text of the page and help tell search engines what the page is about. For Search Engine Optimisation purposes, your page should have a H1 tag at the top of the page containing the most important keywords of the page. The keywords shouldn’t be just listed, it should be a proper heading as in a short sentence of just a few words like you would at the top of any document. If possible the page should also have one or two H2 tags in the page.

URL

Along with page titles, keywords in URL’s are very important. Given the most important keyword included in the page title should be the most important keyword, ideally the URL should contain the first keyword used in the title. The format of the URL is to separate the words with dashes for example:

www.example.com/internet-marketing-services

Images

Images often get forgotten about for Search engine optimization. Images alone don’t include any text so they cannot be seen by search engines therefore images should have a keyword in the file name that is on the title of the page. The structure of the file name is to separate words with a dash, e.g. internet-marketing-services. The image alt text should also be the same as the title, which also matches the file name but no need to have the dashes between the words used in the alt text.
